Is the Southeast Division the best in the NBA?

Saturday, November 7, 2009
By Jon Newberry

The Denver Nuggets are learning very quickly that the Southeast Division is tough this year. When the final buzzer sounded on Saturday night at the Highlight Factory the scoreboard read Hawks 125-Nuggets 100, and the Southeast Division’s record improved to 20-10 on the season.

Everyone knew the defending Eastern Conference Champion Magic were going to be tough. Everyone who paid attention to the Hawks 31-10 home record last season knew that the Highlight Factory produces mainly home team footage. The Heat have been playing as well as anyone the first two weeks of the season, and the Wizards are much improved with a healthy Gilbert Arenas.

Maybe it’s time the analysts show some love to the Southeast Division.

First, I wanna applaud the ATL Hawks for a great game last night, for defending home court, bouncing back from a 20 point loss, and for getting back to playing team basketball. Being resilient, now that’s a good look.

Now hmmm “Is the SE division the best in the NBA? I’ll say yes if it means being the most competitive thus far this year. I think there is gonna be a lot of trading places in the SE division this year because all the teams have improved. Washington has Agent Zero back. Orlando has D12 with Vince Carter. Miami has D Wade and a reawakened J O’neal. Charlotte got former DPOY G Wallace and Tyson Chandler. And of course our ATL Hawks kept the starting five intact and acquired greater depth. Gonna be tough to be the top team this year. I don’t believe it’s a gimmie for Orlando to be number one.

So yeah the analysts definitely need to show some love to the SE division. I mean everyone in the division has a winning record so far. No wait, Washington doesn’t quite right now. Hey looking at the standings the SE division right now has only one team under .500. So based on that I’ll say right now the SE Division is the best division in the NBA. And the most competitive division too.

GO RESILIENT ATL HAWKS! GOTS NOTHING BUT ♥ 4 THE ATL HAWKS! HAWKDAFIED 4 LYFE!

Oh, I meant to say the SE Division has only one team under .500 whereas the other divisions don’t. Well that’s what the standings are right now November 8, 2009. Gonna be interesting to see how the standings end up in the SE division in April. My hope/desire is for the ATL Hawks to be in that #1 spot darn ORL, MIA, CHA, and WAS. :-)

I agree Hawksgirl, the Hawks have a chance at that number 3 seed, as Cleveland’s game on Shaq has not panned out as expected. They will learn like Phoenix did that Shaq is a cancer to the team because he’s old, slow, and doesn’t require a double team anymore. Size was only one issue against Orlando when Cleveland played them in the playoffs last year. They still don’t have the perimeter defense and Dwight Howards’s quickness and leaping ability will still dominate Shaq in the paint, while they’ve improved their shooters in trading for Carter, Anderson, and Barnes.

The Hawks have the team to beat Cleveland in the playoffs this year and will give them a run for their money come playoff time.

Oh, as far as the SE division, I would agree that we have the most competitive division in basketball from top to bottom and will be a battle to the end for 1st place. Hopefully our Hawks will prevail in the end! GOOOO HAWKS!!! (Still a little upset from how bad they played at Charlotte, but felt a little better after the home game against Denver, lol).

Last note, I believe Joe Johnson is going to get more vocal from this point on b/c he’s focused on a championship now. I can apprecaite him calling out his teammates after the loss to Charlotte and even the win af

(cont’d) ter the Denver game. It should have given his teammates a sense of urgency and reality check that they need to come to play defense every night because shots will not fall every night for them as they did in the Denver game.

Exactly Hawksgirl, people don’t know what they really want, but I bet the team appreciated it, and it showed the next night. They just have to bring that attitude every night! The offense is fine, it’s just the interior defense is lacking, giving up too many layups and easy baskets.

Keep in mind Hawksgirl and Anonymous Hawks Guy, the Hawks have to have a better record than everyone in the SE division or win their division to even be in the top 3. You guys mention Cleveland but overlook Orlando which will surely be the team to beat to get that #1 spot in the SE division. But right now you can’t really tell who is gonna be the best at the end of the season. Such a small sample out of the 82 games to really tell. Gotta give props to the ATL Hawks for the great start to the season. Overall I’m left with a positive feeling about the season despite the loss against Charlotte and LA Lakers. Hey the team is 2-2 on the road so far and still undefeated at home 3-0. Can’t help but appreciate that.

Well alrighty then, big ups to Joe Johnson for being named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week. He helped lead his team to a 3-1 record last week. Good to see him get recognized for his hard work last week and not just his vocalizing what he thought his team’s weaknesses were. Wishing him many more opportunities for recognition as the season progresses. And ultimately him leading his team to elite status.

GO ATL HAWKS! CONTINUE THE RISE! KEEP LETTING THEM KNOW! ONE GAME AT A TIME!

Here’s 4 reasons why the hawks is the 4th best team in the league.

    1) Joe Johnson treat J.Crawford like an outcast like he did AC Law.
    2) Josh Smith spend too much time around the perimeter.
    3) Marvin Williams should not be a starter.
    4) Horford is not a true center.

The hawks could be the best team in the east

    1) If Joe Johnson ever learn to pass the ball to J. Crawford when they’re on the court together.
    2) If Josh Smith ever realize that he is a paint man and not a perimeter man.
    3) If M.Woodson ever realize that Marvin Williams is not a starter.
    4) If M.Woodson ever realize that Al Horford is not a true center.

Tony, (NO OFFENSE BUT) are you serious? You’ve got to be kidding me.

    BECAUSE:

1)J.Crawford should get less minutes because he is a ball hog.

2)J.Crabby Crawford should pass the ball because he is destroying what we have here.

3)J.Crabby Crawford should stop being a HATER AND PASS THE FREAK-IN BALL!!!

4)JOE JOHNSON KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING BECAUSE HE IS THE CAPTAIN AND HE IS NOT SELFISH LIKE SOME FOLKS (JAMAL CRAWFORD).

    5) MARVIN IS A STARTER , SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL GET OVER IT BECAUSE J.CRABBY CRAWFORD IS NOT GOING TO START.

    6) I AGREE WITH YOU ON THE AL HORFORD IS NOT A TRUE CENTER, BUT HE SHONUFF IS DOING A GOOD JOB BEING OUR CENTER!!!

THEY WOULD BE A BETTER TEAM IF:

JAMAL would stop being a BALL HOG!!

    People weren’t so selfish!!

can’t wait to see the hawks get 25 games under their belt. they are doing a good job learnibg to play with an expanding rotation. WOODSON will have them ready for all the top teams after he experiment with his rotation. Marvin is a starter. He’s a patient player and puts up modest numbers. If he was on a team not as deep, he would score another 5 or more points a game.

atownhawk23, I like Jamal Crawford because he has that killer instinct . He’s a terrific ball-handler and shooter. He will give the hawks a huge boost when we play Orlando, Boston, Cleveland, and Miami. Remember, MJ(retired), KB, LJ and AI are also ball hoggers.

I never said that I wanted Jamal to replace Marvin William because they play different positions. Sorry if I gave you that impression, but Jamal is more suited at pg. However, I would like to see M.Woodson start Mo Evans over M.Williams if he doesn’t move Al Horford to his natural position(power forward). Marvin William just don’t cut it for me. Sorry Marvin.

I never overlooked Orlando, as I see them as the number 2 team in the East in my opinion. I just feel that the Hawks have the chance to fight for that 3 seed now that it goes by record and not division standings. J Smoove doesn’t play the perimeter anymore, as he has not taken a 3 all season and is shooting close to 60 percent from the field. He understands where is strengths are and is using it to its maximum potential, prime example, the Knicks and Nuggets game.

It’ll take time for JJ and JC to play together, as they are shooters who have great court vision, time playing on the court together will fix that. JC is still new to the team and still has to find the spots where the vets can get him the ball, so time will tell.

I think atownhawk23 is being a little biased toward JC, but opinions are like assholes, we all have one, lol. I think JC should still be the 6th b/c like you said, he brings that killer instinct in when he comes in the game and pick up right where JJ left off, sometimes better. I totall agree that MW should be coming off the bench, while movie JSmoove to the 3, Horford to the 4 and Pachulia to the 5. It would have a direct impact defensively, more rebounds, and scoring will be the same, if not, more effective!

MW is not playing up to the potential of the contract he received in the offseason and has not been agressive, defensively and offensively. He would be a great addition in the second line-up with Crawford, Evans, Joe Smith, and/or Randolph/Collins. He should split minutes w/ Evans and earn more minutes w/ his play. It would have a direct impact defensively, more rebounds, and scoring will be the same, if not, more effective!
