Playing with the Big Boys

Don’t be fooled by the “mid-major” label. Keith Benson played a legit schedule while he was turning in a record setting career at Oakland University.

Last season alone Keith played five games against Big 10 opponents, and one each against the SEC, Big 12 and Big East. Of those teams, six of them were ranked in the top-20 nationally (four were in the top-10).

Okay, so he played against top-level competition, but how did he perform?

In the season opener against West Virginia he finished with 22 points, 15 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Not too shabby.

Then in December, during a tough stretch when the Golden Grizzlies played at #16 Illinois, at home against #8 Michigan State and at #7 Tennessee all within a week, Benson averaged 18 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.

That is all in the past now, as Benson steps on to the court today for the Hawks’ “mini-camp” as a professional basketball player.

Check back later today for an update and an official list of camp participants.
