A Compendium of Hawks Season Predictions

Excitement is high as the Hawks enter the 2012-13 season for one reason: change. Things are going to be different this season.
As you read through the previews below, you’re sure to notice a couple themes regarding Danny Ferry’s offseason moves: the addition of a plethora of sharpshooters in Kyle Korver, John Jenkins and Anthony Morrow, and a revamped backcourt (with Lou Williams and Devin Harris joining the incumbent Jeff Teague) that will allow Atlanta to play at a much faster pace.
Some may look at this 2012-13 season as a “rebuilding”period, but whoever said that was a bad thing? The general consensus in the predictions below has the Hawks making the playoffs, with the strengths of the new-look Hawks’ roster heavily outweighing the weaknesses.
Let’s take a look at what several sites around the internet have to say about the upcoming season:
Yahoo’s major NBA blog gives three different takes on how the Atlanta Hawks’ season will pan out, with one underlying theme – “addition by subtraction”. While there will be issues to overcome with the Hawks’ offseason moves, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives, especially when you take a look a little further down the road…
Predicted Finish: 45-37
2. HoopsHype
With strong interior defense and shooters from the perimeter, the Hawks will be a tough team to beat. However, like every other NBA team, there are still questions – Will Teague step up and run the court like others in that position? And will the frontcourt be enough to compete down low? Read how the Hawks’ strengths and weaknesses balance out to land them a solid “2nd in the Southeast Division” projection.
Predicted Finish: 2nd in the Southeast Division / 8th in the Eastern Conference
3. CBSSports
In this Southeast Division preview, the Hawks are categorized as the team that’s “sitting pretty”. With Al Horford, Teague and Josh Smith predicted to have breakout seasons, the Hawks may break the postseason frustration they have experienced in recent years.
Predicted Finish: 2nd in the Southeast Division, 43-39
This article focuses on the Hawks’ returning “Core Four.” The preview spends a good amount of time focusing on Smoove and Al, but also takes a look at the changes Larry Drew has made, how the revamped backcourt will open up the floor for the Hawks’ sharpshooters and how hitting the Hawks’ “reset button” will affect the upcoming season.
From the offseason moves to strengths/weaknesses and future goals, this preview jumps into all of it. Plus after everything is broken down, an answer is given to the infamous question that Hawks fans have been left to ponder the past few seasons: Will Josh Smith, described as the “Signature Atlanta Hawk,” make an All-Star team?
Predicted Finish: “Atlanta Hawks win 47 games and make the playoffs for the sixth straight season.”
Predicting the Hawks to land an eight seed, this preview sees Atlanta teetering right along the edge of the postseason. With a closer look at the roster additions and what each new player brings to the table, three keys issues are pointed out that could make or break the season:
1. All-The-Time Teague
2. Is J-Smoove ready to be “the guy”?
3. Will LD open up the offense?
Predicted Finish: 43-49, 8th seed
7. Grantland
26 “bold” predictions, one of which has the Hawks claiming homecourt in a first-round playoff series as the No. 4 seed.
Predicted Finish: 4th seed
The Hawks claim the “sneaky good team, in their way” description that focuses on the acquisition of outside shooters
Predicted Finish: 1st round of playoffs
Grantland also deems the Hawks one of the “All League Pass” teams for the upcoming season.
