Mexico Qualifies For World Cup
Mexico didn’t even qualify for the FIBA Americas Championship this year but was added as a replacement team when Panama got suspended.
Now they’re headed to the biggest international basketball tournament in the world.
Gustavo Ayón had a quiet game, playing just 11 minutes and scoring just five points, but it was enough to help Mexico to a 66-59 win over Puerto Rico. The win not only cliched a spot in the FIBA World Cup next year in Spain, but it also gave Mexico the #1 seed in the final round of FIBA Americas.
They’ll play Argentina in the semifinals tomorrow, and the winner will play the Dominican Republic/Puerto Rico winner in the championship.
Ayón also pulled down eight rebounds for Mexico.
