We are counting down the days until the Hawks’ season-opener in Dallas by giving you 50 things to be excited about this year. With 41 days left, today’s is…

Jenkins & Scott

John Jenkins and Mike Scott are entering year two in the NBA, which means no more rookie hazing and higher expectations.

Jenkins will likely see significant playing time with the second unit and could even push himself into a starting role depending on what he does in training camp and the preseason.  After an up-and-down Summer League in which he played well but didn’t shoot great, Jenkins will be tasked with taking on more of a leadership role.  Offensively, we’ll be looking for him to create his own shot and work better in Mike Budenholzer’s pick-and-roll offense.  Defensively, he’ll be tasked with guarding some great shooting guards if he does sneak into a starting role, so the on-ball defense is something to watch.  He’s one of only seven returning players.

Another one of the seven is Scott.  He had a great Summer League and has worked this offseason on becoming a more complete and diverse player.  Specifically, he’s been working on his perimeter jumper and playing defense on the wing.  With Atlanta’s frontcourt crowded this season, Scott may have more luck fitting into the rotation as a small forward rather than a power forward, but time will tell.  Diversifying his skill set is a good start toward getting that playing time.

Both guys will be asked and expected to do more this season.  Let’s hope they deliver!
