The 2013-14 Atlanta Hawks were officially introduced as a team on Monday at media day, where a lot of new faces got their first chance to put on a Hawks uniform. Media day is always one of the more fun days of the year as we learn a little bit more about the players, sometimes about basketball, sometimes not. Here are some of the best quote and highlights from Hawks media day.

The Journey Back to Atlanta

Damien Wilkins on his long journey back home: “It’s always been a journey and, it really hasn’t been any different in recent years, but for me to be back here is special. This is home and you know, like you said, it feels right, it always has. First time I was here it was disappointing to not be here after being here. I didn’t know what it was like before I got here, and then to taste it for that year and not be here, I thought maybe it would never happen again. But for it to come back around again, it means a lot. I’m really thankful for the opportunity.”

Muscle Watch

Mike Scott on losing 15 pounds this summer: “It was just eating better. Trying to become more agile, more versatile, more explosive, quicker, so I had to take care of my eating habits and get on a diet”

Dennis Schröder on gaining weight this summer: “Coach Watt, my fitness coach, he helped me very much with it. We practice every day. Yeah, I get bigger, like, in four weeks I get eight pounds or something like that. We work to get to 175 pounds for the season.”

Diet

A lean Scott describes how he got dropped those 15 pounds: “Yeah [stopped eating McDonalds]. Eating more Whole Foods. They got me on the Whole Foods diet and it’s been working. No more [Krispy Kreme's in the morning].”

A very different philosophy from Pero Antic: “If you practice enough, you can eat anything.”

Zaxby’s connoisseur Lou Williams: “I have [a Zaxby's] right by my place too…I haven’t tried the shakes. I just get the Kickin’ Chicken [sandwich].”

Shorter Front-court

Al Horford on being one of the tallest trees in the Hawks’ front-court: “Yeah, there’s not [a lot of height]. I’m looking around like ‘Man, I’m up there’ [laughs]. Me and Pero, I mean, we’re up there [laughs].”

Traveling as a Dad

Kyle Korver describes his first summer as a father and travelling with a baby: “Man, we had weddings galore and we live in California in the offseason. California’s amazing. I love California, but California is faaar from Philadelphia and Iowa and Wisconsin and Atlanta. When you have to fly with a baby on a five hour flight, you can’t read a book or watch a movie or lose yourself in something. You’re like ‘Your turn. My turn. Please don’t cry. Have a Cheerio. Here’s a toy.’ Flights are long. Five hour flight feels like 10 hours and we had a lot of flights, I think like seven or eight cross-country trips. We had three brothers get married in five weeks. So that was a lot of the summer, was getting ready for trips and unpacking. When you travel with a baby you’ve got a bottle warmer, little tent, the pack-n-play, diapers, diaper bags, bottles, all this stuff. I’m looking forward to travelling with my little suitcase with my sweatpants and my toiletry bag, and that’s it.”

Choosing Number 2

Wilkins explains the process behind choosing the number two: “Yeah, I had to okay it with my guy [Joe Johnson] first. I had to okay it with him. I told him the reason behind it and he was like, ‘Ah, that’s fine.’ But then he said, ‘They didn’t retire it yet?’ [laughs]. I was like, ‘Aww man, I don’t think that’s the thought right now.’ [The reason I'm taking 2 is] well, obviously ‘Nique won’t come down with 21. He says everywhere we go we have to wear the family number, so I told him since I’m in Atlanta can I wear that family number and he was like, ‘Nah I can’t let you wear that.” I can’t get three, two and one add up to three, cause Lou has that. I can’t get 12, well I could, but I don’t want to do that to John. Last year I had eight in Philly, which, that was just a random thing that, I don’t know. So I just went with two, so I have at least one of the family numbers. It feels good though, I like it.”
