Six Days Until the Atlanta Hawks’ Season

San Antonio Spurs v Atlanta Hawks

We are counting down the days until the Hawks’ season-opener in Dallas by giving you 50 things to be excited about this year. With six days left, today’s reason is…

3-Point Barrages

You know, dunks are awesome, as we’ve already established. But dunks are only worth 2 points, and while they are a much more efficient way of scoring, today’s NBA has come to value the 3-point shot more than ever. To be successful in today’s game, you have to be able to hit 3s, and lots of them.

To do that, you’re going to need shooters, and wouldn’t you know it, the Hawks are crawling with them! Kyle Korver (he of #KyleStreak fame), John Jenkins, Lou Williams, Jeff Teague, even new big man Pero Antic all have the ability to step outside the arc and connect* and should be expected to do so this coming season.
*And don’t tell Coach Bud I said this, but I guarantee you Al Horford would shoot league average at worst if he decided to chuck a few more from distance.
3-Pointers are great, but they are also difficult, given their proximity to the basket. Some nights nothing is going to be falling from the downtown area, and when that happens it can spell trouble.
On the other hand, there are some nights when the basket looks as big as a pothole, and when that happens, the place goes bonkers.
Last year the Hawks hit 10 or more 3s in 20 games, by far the most in a single season in franchise history. And while this year’s roster is new, a lot of the guys responsible for those makes are still here, and they will be playing in a system that places tremendous value on gathering open shots from long range.
And on those nights when they are dropping them left and right, it’s going to be a good, good time.

We also want your input. What are you most excited about this upcoming season.  Leave a comment below to let us know, and we may feature your idea in our countdown!
