Scouting Report: Philadelphia 76ers
The Hawks (31-41) will look to end their six-game losing streak Monday night when the Sixers (16-57) come to Philips Arena. The Sixers just broke their 26-game losing streak with a dominant win over the Pistons, and will look to put together back-to-back wins for the first time since Jan. 2 and Jan. 4.
Michael Carter-Williams and Thaddeus Young have been the two bright spots in an otherwise tough season for the Sixers. Young has assumed the role of lead scorer after the Sixers traded Evan Turner at the deadline, and he is averaging 18 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2.2 steals this season. Young is a unique combination of size, length, and athleticism on the wing and plays the three and the four for Philadelphia at times. On defense, he is among the league leaders in steals using his length to disrupt ball-handlers and get in passing lanes.
Carter-Williams has been impressive in his rookie campaign with 16.6 points, 6.2 assists, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals. Carter-Williams has not shot the ball particularly well with a 39.1% FG% and 26.1% 3FG% on the season, but he is adept at getting into the paint and does well in transition.
The Sixers are near the top of the league in pace and love to push the ball in transition with so many young players. The Sixers’ roster has been in flux for much of the year, but they have been consistent in their commitment to playing with tempo and trying to get out and run at any opportunity.
The Hawks will have plenty of opportunities to score on the Sixers, who allow the most points to opponents in the league at 108.9. Atlanta continues to battle injuries, but the Sixers’ defense might just be the answer for the slumping Hawks. Paul Millsap and Jeff Teague will have plenty of opportunities in pick-and-roll to get to the rim or pop out for open jumpers.
The Hawks, one games up on the Knicks for the eighth seed, are in desperate need of a win. They came close on Saturday night in Washington, but fell just short in their comeback bid despite a great effort from Teague in the closing minutes.
