Classic Hawks Teams Featured in NBA 2K12
NBA 2K12 and the Hawks… A Classic Loophole
by Jon Newberry
After the rousing success of NBA 2K11’s inclusion of His Airness, Michael Jordan, 2K Sports made the decision to take it one step further in their next installment, expanding the number of classic players and teams. The game will be available starting on October 4, and here is part of the description from the official web site:
This year the NBA 2K franchise is back and bigger than ever, providing fans with the opportunity they’ve always dreamed of – to finally END THE DEBATE as to who are the best teams and players of all time. Featuring such NBA legends as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird as well as all of your favorite NBA players of today.
Officially, the game is featuring 15 “legends” along with their teams, and while no Hawks were on that list, we must give some credit to some crafty moves by 2K Sports that help give fans even more options.
Dominique Wilkins is the Human Highlight Film. There may not be a player whose game is better suited for designing an exciting video game. While it can be debated whether or not ‘Nique should have made the list of 15 legends, the game designers made sure to take advantage of a generous loophole and get him in the game.
Larry Bird, aka Larry Legend, was an obvious choice for NBA 2K12, and they made the decision to place Bird on his 1985-86 Celtics team. If gamers can beat Larry and his Boston teammates in a “scrimmage” then they unlock the 1985-86 Hawks team, including ‘Nique, Doc Rivers, Spud Webb, Kevin Willis and others. Fans can then try to duplicate the Wilkins/Bird Game 7 duel in the 1986 playoffs.
Similarly, Hawks fans can unlock the 1970-71 team, complete with “Pistol” Pete Maravich, Lou Hudson, Walt Bellamy, and others, by taking down “legend” Jerry West and the L.A. Lakers.
More to come as more screenshots and promos are released, but for now, here is the official trailer for the game from 2K Sports:
