New Hawk Pero Antić Scores Game-Winner For Upset-Minded Macedonia
Pero Antić, who’s set to make his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks this season after being signed this summer, lifted Macedonia to a huge upset win over Greece in the first round of the Basketball SuperCup in Germany Friday.
Antić finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds, as the Macedonians, 9.5 point underdogs, beat the Greeks 77-75 in the SuperCup’s first game.
Antić will be the first Macedonian-born NBA player when he takes the floor this season, and he’s already made a huge impression in his homeland.
Add this to the resumé.
With Macedonia down by one late, Antić drove the lane and hit the game-winner with 10.2 seconds left. He made a late free throw to complete the scoring and give Macedonia the win. The game-winning shot and free throw were his only three points in the second half after leading the team with 13 in the first half.
The other two teams in the round-robin SuperCup are host team Germany and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Macedonia will play Germany Saturday and finish the round-robin with Bosnia-Herzegovina Sunday.
This is the 25th year of the SuperCup, an International Friendly tournament designed to give teams a few preparation games before the 24-team European Championships (EuroBasket) begins Sept. 4.
Macedonia will also compete in that tournament. They are in Group B and will face Montenegro Sept. 4 in Slovenia. Antić is on Macedonia’s roster for that tournament, which concludes Sept. 22.
