We are counting down the days until the Hawks’ season-opener in Dallas by giving you 50 things to be excited about this year.  With 50 days left, today’s is…

New Faces

What better way to kick-start the countdown than by talking about the positive buzz surrounding a revamped roster.  Seven of Atlanta’s 14 currently-signed players will be new to the team.  This includes two rookies, three international faces, two sets of teammates from two different teams last season and a former #1 overall draft pick.  Oh…and they have a new coach too.

Mike Budenholzer – A disciple of Gregg Popovich, “Coach Bud” has seen sustained success as well as anybody.  Now, he has his own chance to mold the Hawks into his own version of what San Antonio is now.  We’re excited to see him and his staff (four of whom are also new) get started this season.  More on him and his staff in a later post in the countdown…

Pero Antić – The first ever Macedonian-born NBA player has a big personality and a decent outside shot.  He should be one of the more entertaining centers to watch in the NBA this year.

Gustavo Ayón – Ayón came over in a waiver claim after Milwaukee chose not to re-sign him.  He got some good reps while playing in the FIBA Americas tournament this summer and should see playing time in the backup forward/center rotation

Elton Brand – Brand brings the veteran presence that every NBA team needs.  He’ll be entering his 15th season and has averaged double figures in 13 of the previous 14.  He grinds on both ends of the floor, and he’s a great guy to have in the locker room as well.

DeMarre Carroll – He’s the typical blue-collar player that every team wants to have.  He’s one of the most underrated defenders in the NBA, and he’s a guy who will give you maximum effort on every play.  Hawks fans will have fun watching The Junkyard Dog play this season.

Jared Cunningham – The Hawks got the the former Oregon State standout in a trade with Dallas on draft night this year.  The Mavericks didn’t do much with the former first round pick in his rookie season last year, so we’re excited to see if he can develop into a nice backup shooting guard for the Hawks.

Paul Millsap – Millsap was Atlanta’s number one free agent target.  He’s a small forward who plays more like a power forward and should fit perfectly into Coach Bud’s defense-first system.  He’s a smart player who doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.

Dennis Schröder – Atlanta’s second first-round pick this year was on the electrifying young point guard from Germany.  Though only 19 years old, Schröder already has a dynamic skill set and should develop nicely behind Jeff Teague.

Two other new faces that we’ll be tracking periodically this season are Lucas Nogueira and Mike Muscala.  Both are 2013 draft picks who signed to play in Spain.

We also want your input.  What are you most excited about this upcoming season.  Leave a comment below to let us know, and we may feature your idea in our countdown!
