Cartier Martin Adds To Forward Competition
With Gustavo Ayon sidelined for 4-8 weeks with a right shoulder injury, the Hawks have added additional competition to its forward rotation with the signing of Cartier Martin Tuesday.
The 6’7″, 220-pounder is entering his sixth season in the league, and although he’s a bit undersized, he’ll compete at both the small and power forward positions. Like many of the Hawks’ big men, he’ll be able to stretch the floor, as he is a career 38 percent three-point shooter and shot a career-best 40 percent last year on a career-high 146 attempts. In all, he averaged 6.6 PPG and 2.4 RPG in 16 minutes per game last season with the Washington Wizards.
As SB Nation’s “Bullets Forver” pointed out last year, Martin is also decent at taking his man off the dribble when the spot-up shot isn’t there.
Martin will be competing with DeMarre Carroll and Mike Scott for playing time at the small forward position when the Hawks stay with their traditional lineup. He’ll be in a battle with others to make the final roster of 15 when the final cuts come before opening night.
