2013 second round pick Mike Muscala has signed with the Hawks after playing the first part of this season in Spain for Rio Natura Monbus. Muscala averaged 14.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in 26.3 minutes per game and shot 54.6% from the field and 87.1% from the free throw line.

“We are really excited that Mike was available to join our team. We’ve closely monitored Mike and his progress throughout the ACB season. Coach Fernandez and his Obradoiro CAB club did an excellent job with his continued development,” Ferry said. “Due to our current injuries, Mike’s representatives presented the concept of Mike joining us for the remainder of the season. With our roster situation and his strong play, we felt now was a good time to add Mike to our program,” Ferry said.

Coming out of the draft, Muscala was known as a good offensive player that had terrific shooting range and floor spacing ability. The rare four-year college player, Muscala’s game — particularly offensively — was very refined as both a shooter and post player. He showed these skills in Spain and established himself quickly becoming Monbus’ team leader in points, rebounds, field goal attempts, made field goals, free throw attempts, made free throws, and blocked shots.

The primary concern coming out of the draft was adding strength to Muscala’s frame and getting him more experience as a paint defender.

His success in Spain has shown an ability to compete and succeed at a high level against grown men, and the Hawks will hope he can carry that success over to the NBA.

Muscala played with the Hawks during the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 5.8 points and 5.2 rebounds in five games.  Although the coaches were in the early stages of implementing Coach Bud’s system, Muscala should hopefully be familiar with the basics having been coached by Atlanta’s assistants during that 12-day period.

To make room for Muscala, the Hawks released Dexter Pittman, who was on a 10-day contract.
